Friends of Naas Hospital
IN 1988 medical and nursing staff in Naas Hospital identified a need in the area of patient care for a Stress ECG machine within the hospital. This need arose because of the difficulty in getting appointments in Dublin Hospitals for Stress ECG’s for cardiac patients. More updated cardiac monitoring devices and the replacement of other outdated equipment was also deemed a necessity. In view of the difficulty in gaining extra resources from the Health Board, it was decided to set up a fund-raising Committee consisting of hospital staff and interested members of the public. Within the last decade, approximately 800,000 Euros has been raised by fundraising ventures. These have included various events such as fashion shows, concerts, food demonstrations, raffles, soccer matches, golf classics, marathons, cycle rallies, table quiz, dances and private donations. Various groups have been involved in organising these events for example JF Dunne Insurance, The Lions Club, Naas Musical Society, The I.F.A. Bord Bia, Kare, The Vintners Association, Naas Cycle Club The Soroptimists and the Kildare GP Faculty, Nas Na Ri Singers, The Curragh Local History Group, Kildare Hunt Club and Macra Na Feirme. Individuals have also contributed funds by getting sponsorship for various sporting events. We have received many donations in lieu of flowers from families of deceased patients and also been bequested money in wills. We are grateful for donations at any time. The money has been used to purchase valuable equipment which enhances patient care in the hospital. These include a Stress ECG Machine, Central Cardiac Monitor, 24 Hour monitoring devices, I.V. infusion pumps, morphine infusion syringes, dinamaps, portable monitors, large couch & electronic standing frame in physio department, Ultra sound Couch for Xray Dept. printer for scope patients in theatre, Phlebotomy Chair for OPD, Resistance Machine for Cardiac Rehab. reclining chairs for patients, and many other items that enhance patient care. The Friends of Naas Hospital hope to contribute to the setting up of a service for Oncology Patients at Naas Hospital in 2006…..
The Friends of Naas Hospital and Kildare Library Service have combined to provide a library service for patients and staff in Naas General Hospital. The Friends of Naas Hospital would like to thank all who helped us over the years.

Moat Theatre
The Moat Club was formed in the early 1950′s, its object to provide Naas with suitable facilities for drama and table tennis. In 1960 they bought the recently vacated Christian Brothers School. With a great deal of hard work, a well equipped 125 seat theatre was opened in 1963.
However, as the new millennium approached the Club decided to move wiTh the times. A brand new theatre was built on the existing site, incorporating the old building at a cost of €3.2m. With lots of hard work and major fund raising, the new Moat Theatre opened its doors officially on the 11th April 2003. It includes a 200 seater auditorium and stage with retractable seating and a fly tower, two rehearsal rooms, male and female dressing rooms and a foyer/coffee shop and bar area.

Naas Local History Group was founded in 1984 with a mission; to record and present the rich and colourful story of our town. We are determined to make its history available and accessible to everybody. For, ultimately, our history is not a dry collection of facts and details but the warm, lively and essentially human story of the personalities and events from which the fabric of our town is woven.
Each year we arrange a programme of history talks at 8pm, on the first Monday of each month, from September to April in Naas Library. (by Kind Permission of Kildare Co Librarian). During the Summer the group organises local Naas town walks and outings to places of historical interest throughout the island of Ireland.
Naas Local History Group is very proud of the fact that it compiled and published Nas na Riogh, From Poorhouse Road to the Fairyflax … an illustrated history of Naas, the first ever book to be devoted exclusively to the history of Naas, which puts our commitment to making history accessible into permanent form. First published in 1990, the book has been revised and republished, (with an additional chapter on the history of Naas Urban District Council) in 2001.
Since it foundation, the group has mounted a number of Historical Exhibitions, and instigated a number of projects. The Leinster Leader Indexation Project, the Famine Graveyard Memorial Park at St Mary’s, The Famine Memorial in Naas General Hospital. And the publication in November 1998 of the group’s second book A History of Naas Hospital… from Workhouse to Hospital, which charts the progression of the Workhouse from an institution built in the nineteenth century to house the destitute to a modern General Hospital of the twenty first century.
During 1998 the group undertook a project to photograph Naas and its people at the end of the century and the millennium. The project included just about everything that caught the attention of Stan Hickey and his camera during the period from mid 1998 to 2000. The results went on display in Naas library in February 2000, and later in book form under the title Nas na Riogh Da Mhile- Sin mar a bhi…Naas 2000… the way we were; a snapshot of Naas and its people at the end of the Millennium. All three books are available in Naas Bookshops. Click on our notices below for up-to-date happenings.
