The following loving tribute was read at Jane’s funeral mass.
Tribute to Jane
I met Jane when she was 16. We were engaged at 17 and married when she was 21. The first few years were very difficult as Jane’s Mother had a brain haemorrhage and passed away at the age of 39 leaving her broken hearted. When her first of our 5 children arrived that changed everything for the better.
Jane was a model wife, mother and grandmother who worked tirelessly all her life for her family and her home. Her three granddaughters, Aimee, Róisín and Emily held a very special place in her heart. At first Jane looked after children, moved on to work in hotels and restaurants and finally became a carer. She loved looking after old people, just too many to name.
Jane had hundreds of friends, some of them very special who enriched her life in different ways and she theirs in return with her love, kindness, gentleness and by just being there. Her attitude was “If someone is in trouble, drop everything and go, no matter what the hour.” Jane spent her time thinking of ways to do the unexpected, kind deeds which touched people in a special way.
All Jane wanted in life was love and happiness for everybody, especially in the home.
Sadly for Jane, her work ended a year and a half ago when she was diagnosed with cancer. She was treated most professionally by an excellent doctor, Dr. Johnny McHugh at Tallaght Hospital. In the first 6 months she responded well to treatment and went into remission.
Unfortunately, having battled her treatment and a stem cell transplant her remission was short lived.
Jane spent Christmas in James’ Hospital more ill than she had ever been. She was treated by a brilliant doctor, Dr. Van Der Berg, her team and a woman named Peg Carroll. She received the best treatment available and was always treated with the highest quality of care which we were very grateful for. She then returned to Tallaght Hospital and was treated under Dr. McHugh and his team. The treatment that she received in Tallaght was of the highest quality in the world. I would like to mention especially the nursing staff and catering staff, especially Imelda and Ursula, for their compassion, kindness and professionalism which was shown to both Jane and the family at all times. We were most grateful for that. They did everything possible in both hospitals to make Jane better but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. There was just nothing more they could do except to ensure that Jane was comfortable and pain-free in her final weeks.
The last week, we will never forget. Myself, our children and Jane’s brother Thomes took up residence in Tallaght to be with Jane night and day until on Thursday the 11th of April Jane passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, the thing she valued the most. Jane taught her children many lessons in life especially throughout her illness by showing courage, dignity and bravery and an unrelenting sense of humour. Jane came from a wonderful family who were always there for her because they loved her so much especially during her illness. Jane loved all of her family very much also.
I would now like to thank all of Jane’s wonderful friends for their support and friendship throughout her illness and in particular when they were needed most, especially in the past week.
I would also like to thank Fr. Brickley for visiting Jane on numerous occasions and just for being there as always for the family. I thank Fr. P.J. who also visited Jane and whose presence at the removal yesterday was very special.
We would also like to thank Hughes Funeral Directors for their excellence and promptness in returning Jane home to us.
I thank God for my lifetime with Jane. When she became sick I told her that her illness was my illness and that we were in this together. As her husband it was a privilege to look after my wonderful wife whom I loved very much. The only consolation I can take is that Jane is now with her mother whom she hasn’t seen for 43 years, her father and her two baby sisters. I do hope that when my time comes that God will allow me to meet up with Jane where we can take up where we left off. May Jane’s gentle and beautiful soul rest in peace.
