20th December – Advent Prayer

An angel appeared to Mary and said; “You shall conceive and bear a Son and shall name him Jesus…” “I am the handmaid of the Lord,” said Mary, “let it be done unto me according to your word.” Lk., 1:31, 38.

Mary’s response to the angel boils down to “Thy will be done.” It is the most profound response a person can make to God’s will. It is a response Mary taught her Son Jesus to make. It is the response Jesus challenges us to make in the Our Father. It is the response Jesus made in his agony in the garden; “Not my will… buts Yours be done.” Lk., 22:44

These responses of Jesus and Mary to God’s call, invites me to reflect upon my response to His call in my life now. Where is God calling me? How am I responding to God’s call in my life now?

What we usually pray to God, is not that His will be done, but that He approve of ours.” Helga Bergold Gross.
